霹雳舞Breaking是一种以个人风格为主的技巧性街舞舞种，也是北美街舞中最早的舞种。霹雳舞Breaking起源于美国70年代的布朗克斯区。比较值得注意的是，早期跳霹雳舞Breaking的舞者多为西班牙语裔美国人，非裔美国人，然而他们当初偏好的音乐风格却大大影响的嘻哈和节奏蓝调音乐。
霹雳舞Breaking起源于美国， 它的创始人是美国东海岸黑人歌星詹姆斯·布劳德。他于1949年在电视上唱新歌时，自己创作了一种稀奇古怪的动作，青年们竞相模仿，并在街头进行跳舞比赛。这种舞蹈传到西海岸洛杉矶后，又出现了模仿木偶机器人动作的舞蹈。美国东西两岸两大派街头舞蹈结合起来，深受青年们的欢迎，因这种舞蹈大都在街头表演，故又称“街头舞蹈”。
这种舞蹈的英文名字为“Break Dance”，中文译为“布雷克舞”，也有人形象的译为“霹雳舞”。对于跳“布雷克舞”的人来说，霹雳舞是个专用名词，只有那些贴近地面，以头、肩、背、膝为重心，迅速旋转、翻滚的动作才叫“霹雳”。模仿木偶、机器人或月球漫步的舞步，是“布雷克舞”的另一种形式。
霹雳舞Breaking传入中国时，马路边、广场上，常能看到年轻人潇洒地走起“太空步”，或是对着空气“擦玻璃”。
1983年，张彻导演的霹雳舞电影《霹雳情》也一度引发过社会热潮。而在这两年，围绕《这！就是街舞》和明星导师的表演更是频频成为社交媒体的热搜榜首。
