It’s been a couple of years now since the Swedish House Mafia disbanded, but that doesn’t seem to have in any way impacted on the global draw of its former members, not least Axwell. “I went to Chile for the first time this year,” he says. “It was super interesting to connect with these insane people that I've never seen before. Our residency at Ushuaia Ibiza has been pretty amazing, too — there was a certain electricity that I didn’t feel last year.” Musically, both in original and remix form on his own Axtone label, Axwell’s sound has moved on from the maximalist and anthemic festival house he dealt in before, and toward a slightly more nuanced house vibe. “I’ve been turned on by melancholic and sad music this summer. We are trying to bring something new to the table and it’s been both pleasant and a challenge to road-test it and tweak it along the way.” The we, of course, relates to his new partnership with fellow Swede Seb Ingrosso, and in 2015 the pair will release their debut album on Def Jam, no less. “It will sound like us,” he reckons. “Hopefully evolved, but still the same!”
