ONE of the hottest DJs and producers on the circuit, Erol Alkan's rise to fame was hardly a rushed affair. Starting his now legendary Monday club Trash in the late-'90s, he built his reputation in the time-honoured way. As the club's reputation grew, so did Erol's. Both became associated with the emergence of guitars on the dancefloor, the rise of no wave and electroclash, electro-house, disco-punk and nu-rave. "I find describing my style rather difficult," says Erol. "The music I like to play out has a certain energy or character and charisma. I look for a good energy, but it doesn't have to be fast or aggressive." Earlier this year Erol celebrated Trash's 10th birthday by unexpectedly closing the night - in its wake launching a new night called Durr. "I wanted to put the lid on it and let it be a good memory," he explains. "I've gone from running a club on my own to being able to do many different things. "I've been working in the studio making records and making records with bands. Hopefully, by the end of the year there will be a couple of bands' LPs out with my name on the cover."
